SFX is a magazine that is geared toward the traditional 'geek'. At first glance the consumer gets the impression that the magazine is about special effects, but after glancing through it, the consumer finds it is about movies, television, and sci-fi and fantasy books.
The magazine is traditional, meaning that it is printed on glossy pages, and every inch is used to convey it's message. The consumer will find it in the magazine section of a store, and will be drawn in by the colors or cover photo. After spending time with the magazine, the consumer will either put it back and forget about it's contents, or buy it to continue their perusal.
Personally I was drawn in by the cover photo and the font used for SFX. I felt the two went very well together, and that someone had taken the time to think about the font in conjunction with the photo. In the end, whether that was their intention or not wasn't the point. I bought the magazine.
